Book Review: Horizontal Parenting – How To Entertain Your Kid While Lying Down

A friend of mine was walking through target the other day when she came across this book: Horizontal Parenting – How To Entertain Your Kid While Lying Down by Michelle Woo. It sounded right up my alley, so I bought a copy to review!

This book is aimed at parents in general – because every parent has days when they just want to lie down. But I do love that this book (and the fact that it’s for sale in a mainstream place like Target) normalizes the fact that all parents have their own bodies and their own energy levels. While some days we might enthusiastically play with our kids, no one can do that 100% of the time. Sometimes we need rest.

This book features 50 games/scenarios that you can set up for your kid – all of which allow you to lie down. Each game has a name, an explanation, a drawing, and an idea for “bonus points.”

Some of the suggestions honestly appear to be in there just for the sake of humor, while others seem like they might make a pretty gigantic mess (sort of defeating the point of getting a rest, don’t you think?) But I do still think there are some clever ideas that could actually be quite practical for parents who are living with chronic illness when they’re having a rough day. My personal favorites include: “Railroad to Relaxation,” “Catch the Firefly,” and “What’s on My Butt?”
