About Me!

My name is Mariah.
I have RA.
It doesn't have me.

In the Spring of 2008, long before I became a mother, I was an extremely busy dual degree graduate student. Then it happened. It started with some pain in my toes. Then fatigue and anemia. Followed by pain and swelling in my fingers. Wrists. Ankles. Knees. With all my symptoms adding up, the doctors gave me my diagnosis: rheumatoid arthritis (RA). I was 25 years old.

In the years since my diagnosis, I graduated with both degrees and married my amazingly supportive partner. But one of the biggest challenges I've faced was figuring out how to achieve my dream of motherhood while living with RA. At the time I was considering my first pregnancy, there were very few resources available on the topic of chronic illness and motherhood, and the ones that did exist were very clinical and not very uplifting. I was desperate to hear from another woman with a chronic illness who had successfully become a mother - just to know it was possible and that I wasn't completely crazy for wanting it for myself! But at the time there weren't many blogs on the subject and there was a lot less social media. My path to motherhood was lonely and scary, and I've made it my goal to improve things for women going forward!

Today my oldest son is 5 (and in kindergarten!), my second son is 3, and I've got a baby girl on the way! I've done a lot of research and gained a lot of personal experience on chronic illness and motherhood - from conception to pregnancy to how on earth to keep up with kids while juggling my own health! The Mamas Facing Forward website will bring together everything I've learned and organize it in a "one-stop-shop" for moms and moms-to-be going forward! If you know of great resources on this subject or would like to contribute, please shoot me an email at mariah@fromthispointforward.com!
